CASE STUDY
IDENTIFYING A HIDDEN HAZARD:
Confined Space Risk Mitigation for an Industrial Client
Challenge:
A client unknowingly allowed workers to enter a space that legally qualified as a confined space—but had not been identified or treated as one. As a result, standard safety protocols such as gas testing, rescue plans, and confined space attendants were never put in place. This created serious compliance risks and exposed workers to life-threatening hazards.
Solution:
Star Safety conducted a full risk assessment of the space and immediately flagged the issue. Ryan worked directly with the client to develop a legally compliant Confined Space Code of Practice and a Rescue Plan, including:
- Pre-entry gas testing procedures
- Clear roles and responsibilities (attendant, entrant, and rescue personnel)
- Emergency procedures
- Safe entry protocols
Outcome:
The client achieved compliance with WorkSafeNB regulations and significantly reduced the risk of injury or liability. Workers were educated on confined space procedures, and the organization now includes confined space identification in future planning phases.
